Volunteer Opportunities Around the Community

Would you like to do more around your community? We want to help you do that! Keep an eye on this page for an updated list of community volunteer opportunities from many different organizations in the community, like the National Museum of Wildlife Art and the Teton Literacy Center. Check out the descriptions of the different volunteering jobs below, then click the button to be taken to that organization’s website.

Become a Volunteer Trail Ambassador!

We are recruiting a Volunteer Ambassador who would work in coordination with district recreation staff to help provide information and education to the public, specifically in the Teton Pass, Fall Creek, and Mosquito Creek area(s). Ideally, we are looking to recruit a volunteer local to Teton County who can volunteer 3-5 days per week (20-40hrs/wk).

Due to the popularity and high volume of visitation in the areas mentioned above, the Jackson Ranger District would like to increase their outreach presence. An ambassador would have an in-person presence to emphasize rules and regulations, keep an eye on facilities, and provide the public with better service. Other duties include collecting and communicating information on trails, trailhead conditions, facility conditions, signage, proper food storage in bear country, extinguishing campfires, and providing safety information to a forest service point of contact or supervisor as appropriate. Raising awareness about bear safety will be a critical messaging component of this position (i.e. carrying bear spray and sharing information on how to avoid adverse encounters).

Additionally, the Fall Creek Area is an amazing location on the Bridger-Teton National Forest. Southwest of the town of Jackson, the area is full of natural beauty. There are many hiking, biking, and motorcycle opportunities in this area as well as great wildlife viewing and dispersed camping. This area has seen an increase in pressure as people look for camping opportunities around Jackson. This location is near to Mosquito Creek, another popular dispersed camping and recreation area.

This volunteer opportunity takes place from June 1 – September 1, 2025. Reach out to Hananh Jacobsen at hannah.jacobsen@usda.gov if you are interested in applying or if have any questions.

  • Hands-On Action—Roll up your sleeves to clean up our local park! We might be picking up litter, but you are guaranteed a wildlife sighting!
  • Educational Opportunities- Ask questions and learn about environmental stewardship and sustainability practices from other volunteers and local organizations at the event.

What to bring: A reusable water bottle, comfortable clothing/layers, suitable shoes for outdoor work, gloves (if you do not want to use latex gloves), and a positive attitude!

Become a Pet Foster Parent

PAWS and Jackson Animal Adoption Center are seeking dog and cat foster homes! If you want to add some fun to your life and have the means to take in a pet or two, this is an excellent chance to have some fun with some animals without the adoption commitment. Read the descriptions for each organization’s opportunity below:

Jackson Animal Adoption Center (dog-specific fostering):

The Animal Adoption Center relies on the generosity of foster parents to provide loving and temporary homes for the dogs in our program. Dogs do not stay overnight at our facility, so foster homes are where they spend the majority of their time until they find their perfect forever home! Foster parents provide an in-home experience that helps prepare the dogs for placement with their future adoptive family by allowing them to learn valuable household manners. Additionally, foster parents help us understand each animal’s particular needs and determine the best long-term placement for each dog. Adoptable dogs are in their foster home full-time and only come into the AAC to switch to a new foster or to meet a potential adopter! Their lives are filled with love and adventure until their forever family finds them.

The AAC provides a foster bag with everything the dog will need for their foster period. This includes food, treats, toys, a bed, a crate, and anything else a specific dog may need. Sometimes we need a foster for just a night or two, other times we are looking for someone to take a dog for up to a few weeks. Some fosters sign on to a dog as their long-term foster until adoption. We welcome anyone interested in becoming a foster parent, whether just for a night or two or long term.

Fill out an application to become a foster parent! Thank you for your interest in helping us rescue more animals by being a foster! Contact the Adoption Counselors at the AAC for more information at 307-739-1881

PAWS:

PAWS (Providing Animal Welfare Services) is seeking fosters for dogs and cats residing in our Driggs shelter. PAWS will transport the animals to you and provide all necessary supplies to make the experience easy and fulfilling! Contact Stephanie Sokol for more information at 307-734-2441 or stephanie@pawshelpspets.org.

Tutor for the Teton Literacy Center

Students reading six months or more below grade level work one-to-one with a volunteer tutor for one hour after school each week. This is a full school-year volunteer commitment except for holidays and school breaks. Students gain confidence and establish a rapport with their tutor through literacy tutoring. They also build comprehension, fluency, word decoding, and writing skills. Tutoring sessions offer the opportunity to focus on personalized literacy and learning needs. Tutors are not required to have any prior teaching/tutoring experience. We offer training before tutors are matched with their students. We are also looking for volunteers who want to help with office work and organization and substitute tutors who can volunteer as needed.

For more information or assistance in volunteering, contact the Teton Literacy Center office at (307) 733-9242.

Docent at the National Museum of Wildlife Art

The National Museum of Wildlife Art is looking for volunteer docents to join our program and lead art collection tours. Our Museum has over 100 pre-scheduled tours with private groups each year that require volunteer docents. Docents sign up for tours online, which means you can choose your own schedule. The majority of tours occur in December through February and June through September.

Anyone interested in becoming a docent does not need to have an art background. We will train you and provide you with learning materials such as books, articles, and videos. Training to become a docent takes most people 3-6 months to complete.

Becoming a docent is a truly rewarding experience. We rotate exhibits about three times per year, so there is always more to learn. We also provide specialized training sessions for our docents, so the learning never stops! If you are interested in signing up or have any other questions, please contact Danny Knight at dknight@wildlifeart.org or call Danny at 307-732-5443. Learn more here.
